7th day (last day)

Weight: 171.2 lbs  Bodyfat: 12.3%     100.68 miles out of 100

Woke up and calves were sore as usual but since I'm not doing a morning run today I will have plenty of time to massage them before my afternoon long run. I'm planning to do around 20 miles which would bring my total to 104 miles for the week. I haven't decided where I'm going to run yet. I'm leaning towards Shevlin park but I might also run at Green Lakes.

I made it!

Last run of the week (16 miles)

This was by far my hardest run of the week. I was wearing a camelbak and it made going uphill much much harder. That and also the fact that my calves were sore and tired. I should have picked a easier course than Phil's trail in Bend. Too many hills and sandy trails. I am dead but happy. When I started this journey I had no idea if I could run 100 miles in a week. Now I know that I can.  I doubt I will be doing this again soon. It was a good experience but with the limited time that I have during the day running 3 times a day with a baby at home is not really feasible. I leave that to the pros out there trying to make a living out of running.

1st morning run (2.1 miles)

For some reason this is always my worst run of the day. Today was no exception. I did my usual run towards Sawyer Park. I felt better towards the end of the run but the legs are sore. It's gona be a hard last two days, I feel it.

Afternoon run (7.1 miles)

Didn't really feel like running this afternoon as it was raining and gloomy but got my butt out of the door and after a few miles I was treking along. I realized that I just need to have fun out there and that's what I did. I started going up this big hill and soon realized that it was too much for me to handle so I turned back and kept going on the same trail I was on. Ended up running a little less than the 8 miles I planned to run but I'm still on schedule to hit at least 100 miles if I run 20 miles tomorrow. We will see how the legs feel for this last day!

5th day

Weight: 175lbs  Bodyfat: Not yet measured  72.46 miles out of 100

Woke up and calves were just sooo sore! I massaged them by rolling on a small tennis ball and they feel a little better. Will also roll on the foam roller before my first morning run. I wish I could take a day off today but the show must go on!

1st Morning run (2.1 miles)

Didn't feel like running this morning but pushed myself to get out of the door and the run went fine. It was sunny and around 45 degrees. I ran really easy and it felt good.

Sawyer Park bridge that I run on everyday!

2nd Morning run(3 miles)

My second run was also on a trail next to my house and it felt ok except that in the middle I had to climb this big hill and I didn't feel like it. I took a nap after this run to recharge my batteries. When I woke up I massaged my calves some more with the massage stick and I felt ready to tackle another 8 miler!

Afternoon run (8.37 miles)

I ran at the Old Mill river trail in Bend. The weather was perfect for running (75 degrees or so) and it motivated me to enjoy the run and forget about the mileage. I had my best run so far and felt like I could have gone much faster but didn't want to push it too much for fear of not making it through the week which is my goal. So I kept it under control and tried to keep most of my miles under 9 minutes pace. I ended up climbing close to 1000 ft. This trail is about 30 seconds per mile slower than a flat course so I think I did well. Did some stretching after the run and I'm ready for the last two days of my week. I'm not nearly as tired as I thought I was going to be.

4th day

Weight: 175lbs  Bodyfat: 9.8%      58.7 miles out of 100

I don't know if I'm over-compensating but I've been gaining weight everyday since I started this thing. Bodyfat is down though. Woke up this morning and my calves are really sore. I will need to massage them before my first run this morning in a few hours.

1st Morning run (2.1 miles)

I massaged my legs with a tennis ball and off I went out the door for my first run of the day. The legs felt heavier and sorer than the previous days but I made it. Pace was 9'/mile.

2nd Morning run(3 miles)

Ran on the road because I didn't want to run on hills. My legs are tired but I still ran under 9' pace. I will need a long nap before this afternoon's run. I also feel a beginning of plantar fasciitis so I will ice and massage my feet.

Afternoon run (8.37 miles)

My legs were tired and the first 4 miles were uphill so the pace was slow but because it was on a trail my calves felt better than in the morning when I ran on the road. Got lost on the way back so I ran a little more than I wanted to. Also my HR was high even though I wasn't going fast. Good run nonetheless.

3rd day

Weight: 174.0 lbs Bodyfat: 11.8%                             45.3 miles out of 100

Woke up and calves were sore. Iced them a bit this morning and I already feel better. Ready for another 13 mile day!

1st morning run (2.1 miles)

Felt a little stiff in the beginning but better after one mile. There is one big hill after 3/4 of a mile and my quads felt heavy. Other than that good run. Ran at Sawyer park just like yesterday.

2nd morning run (3 miles)

My back started hurting after the first morning run. Rolled on the foam roller and put some peppermint oil on it. 2nd run went well. The second and third miles were fairly fast for how much running I've been putting in lately. I also ate before the run which made me feel better than yesterday.

Afternoon run (8.6 miles)

I ran two loops of the Old mill river trail loop in Bend. This run was harder than I had anticipated. Much harder than yesterday's afternoon run. I struggled to keep going but I was able to make it longer than I wanted to. I ended up running 8.6 miles. I think the legs are going to be really sore tomorrow...

2nd day

Weight: 174.2lbs Bodyfat: 11.5%                           31.6 miles out of 100

Last night I felt I could run more and faster. This morning the legs are heavy and sore. We will see how today's runs go but I think it will be harder than yesterday even though I'm only running 13 miles instead of 20.

First morning run (2.1 miles)

Felt pretty good, much better than when I don't run 20 miles the day before. HR was a little high in the first mile but I think that's due a problem with my watch/HR monitor.

Second morning run (3 miles)

Felt a little bit sore and at the end my stomach was growling. 1130am is usually the time that I break for lunch. Running instead of eating? My body wasn't happy with that. I'll have a snack tomorrow before my second run.

Afternoon run (6.7 miles)

Ran 6.7 miles with my wife Zita on a trail next to the Tetherow Golf course in Bend and then next to the river trail. We kept the pace honest (8'50/mile average) on a hilly terrain. Legs felt good. I was just a little low on energy at the end. Maybe take a Gu on my afternoon run tomorrow.

First day of training

Weight: 173.2 Bodyfat 12.3% (same as yesterday)  19.8 miles out 100

Morning run (13 miles)

I started my 100 mile week today by a 13 mile trail run called the Green Lakes loop. It is very pretty there and also steep and slow. It took Jason Adams and I 2:15 to complete the loop. My watch died half way into the run so I only have partial data for this run. I should have had two watches with me because my watch was acting up this morning even though it was fully charged...

Green Lakes. One of the most beautiful runs on the West Coast of the USA

I am feeling pretty good after this run and could have done another loop at that pace. I'm not sure that would have been the best strategy to make it through a 100 mile week so instead I will run again later today. I will try to do between 6 and 7 miles. So far so good, the body is feeling great. I had a breakfast burrito after the run with eggs, bacon, potatoes and hot salsa.

I ended up falling twice in some creeks because the rocks were icy and I slipped. My shoes are covered in trail sand and wet. Time to put them in the washing machine!

Afternoon run (6.8 miles)

In the afternoon I ran 6.8 miles on the trail next to my house (Sawyer Park). I ended up running by myself because my wife didn't feel like running. Boo! So I stuck to my plan of running 20 miles on the first day and I felt great. Here's a link to my second run: http://app.strava.com/runs/24372887

We ended up going to dinner at Pastini at the Old Mill in Bend and I had vegetable soup, rigatoni with squash, spinash and chicken. And of course Tiramisu!
